Recently at my therapy room in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, I have been working with some children who are not attending school due to anxiety. Following our session’s, it is sometimes clear that the child needs something that a school is not currently offering them and this becomes a barrier to their learning.

On giving recommendations, some schools have been amazing and have followed suggested support and gone over and above what has been suggested, so that the young people feel heard and can access education fully, removing the barriers.

Other schools have simply said they cannot change or adapt anything. Saying they do not have any resources to help or accommodate these children and that the children simply must return to school and just ‘get on with it’.

Would you want to return to a situation that has been and continues to be traumatising? If someone kicks you every day, does it eventually stop hurting? No it doesn’t! The person must stop kicking you – things need to change!

Often when children get to the point of not attending, they have been pushed to the absolute limit and just cannot take it any more!

Some of these children will be on the Autistic spectrum, some will not. There may be different reasons for school avoidance, however just ‘getting on with things’ is often simply not an option for most. Many of these children cannot get out of their front door. This is not an option, most want to learn!

If your school is one that adapts to the needs of it’s pupils and supports them, no matter what the situation…amazing!
