How can NLP help children?
Children experience many things in their lives. It is something that helps to shape them into being the people that they become. There are many wonderful experiences that children encounter. Making new friends, learning new sports, writing their name for the first time, having birthday parties, having a new pet, going on holiday, going camping, making mud pies, and flying a kite. You may have children that have had some of these experiences and you may have had some of these experiences yourself growing up.
Happy experiences are not the only ones that help to shape us. Sometimes children encounter the “not so nice” situations that life throws at us too! Maybe losing a grandparent, having to change schools, moving house, dealing with their best friend moving away, taking exams, parents separating, to mention a few situations that may be unhappy for them. Often children will take some time to work things out for themselves, but sometimes they get stuck in a rut and can’t get to the happy, calm place that they want to be in. This is where NLP can be a powerful solution!
NLP sounds complicated! What is it? NLP stands for neuro linguistic programming. Neuro refers to your brain and your thinking, linguistics refers to your communication and the words that you use and programming, refers to the codes that your brain uses to run thoughts. NLP may seem like a new form of therapy for some people in the UK, but it is in fact very well-known and well used in America and Eastern countries. NLP will change the way a child thinks and feels for the better, using some adapted techniques (adapted from techniques used with adults) or with techniques especially created for children.
NLP is a talking therapy a bit like counselling, but can be considerably more proactive. Often taking 2-6 sessions rather than 20-30 that counselling may require. The child often does not need to discuss their worries, as NLP is very much about what is happening now and in the future, therefore NLP sessions can feel much more comfortable for children than other forms of therapy.
NLP has been proven to be effective in helping children with a variety of problems, including anxiety, eating disorders, self-harming, sleep issues, behaviour issues, parents separating, friendship issues, bereavement, exam stress and much more!
In conclusion, although for some people NLP is a reasonably new form of talking therapy it is powerful and effective, helping children with a range of problems, from sleep issues to bereavement. NLP sessions are proactive and help children to deal with difficult situations in life so that they can get to a place where they can enjoy all of the good things again!
